A word about clubs and organizations

So, you'll be about two weeks into the semester, and most if not all clubs and student orgs will be holding elections for class representatives - including the 1L rep. Unless you have been eyeing and coveting a particular organization since before you stepped onto campus, it is a bad idea to even consider joining and/or running.

First off, you don't have time to learn anything about the club. The informational sessions that they hold are usually during the free period of the day session. That counts you out. If certain clubs do hold evening sessions, you have to use the little time you have before class preparing and going over your case briefs before class starts. The free pizza and munchies may be tempting, but focus!

But, say for argument's sake that you know everything you need to know about joining Club X. You enjoy the people, you support the cause, you want it on your resume. You decide to run for 1L rep. How do you get to the meetings? The clubs meet during the free periods of the day session! So much for that!

Some schools, like Rutgers, will have an Evening Student Association which, presumably, holds its meetings in the evening. That may be more conducive to your schedule, but as a 1L it is much wiser to devote your time to your reading and case briefing. There will be plenty of time for activities during your 2L, when you have a handle on things.

The ESA at Rutgers is having its informational session tomorrow evening after class. I'm going to pop in and see what it's all about, and will report back. After all , they're going to have pizza!
